Biography

Konstantinos Volanakis (1837–1907) was a Greek seascape painter and the principal interpreter of the Greek War of Independence in painting. Trained in Munich, where he absorbed the polished academic technique of the Bavarian school, Volanakis returned to Athens in 1883 and taught at the Athens School of Fine Arts. His paintings of the Greek revolutionary navy — particularly The Sortie of the Aris — became defining images of Greek national memory.

Artistic Style

Volanakis painted with luminous Munich academic technique, dramatic skies, careful naval-architectural detail, and a refined Mediterranean palette of blues and silvery whites. His marine compositions favor sailing-ship engagements and harbor views.

Historical Significance

Volanakis produced the definitive painted images of the Greek War of Independence at sea and established Greek marine painting as a distinct national genre.
