This attention to coastal genre subjects reflects the influence of Dutch and Flemish marine painting that Volanakis absorbed during his Antwerp studies, where humble fishing scenes had been elevated into high art since the seventeenth century. On the Greek coast these subjects carried additional weight: fishing communities were economically central to island and mainland Greek life, and depicting them with dignity and care was itself a kind of cultural statement.
