Holy Family with a Shepherd
Battista Dossi·early 1520s
Historical Context
Battista Dossi was the brother and collaborator of the more famous Dosso Dossi, working together at the Este court in Ferrara. This early 1520s Holy Family with a Shepherd demonstrates the distinctive Ferrarese school that combined Venetian coloristic richness with the lyrical, sometimes eccentric compositions that characterized painting at the Este court, one of the most culturally sophisticated courts in Renaissance Italy.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas displays the warm Ferrarese palette with Venetian-influenced coloring and soft, atmospheric modeling. The pastoral setting and gentle figure grouping create an intimate devotional scene characteristic of early cinquecento Ferrara.
Provenance
