Madonna and Child with St. John
Battista Dossi·1526
Historical Context
Battista Dossi was the younger brother and frequent collaborator of Dosso Dossi, one of the most individual painters of the Ferrarese Renaissance. This Madonna and Child with St. John, dated 1526 and held in the National Museum in Warsaw, reflects Battista's closeness to Dosso's style — warm Venetian colour, expressive landscape settings, and a poetic atmosphere that distinguishes Ferrarese painting from both Roman classicism and Venetian sensuousness. Attribution between the brothers is sometimes difficult. This Warsaw panel is a significant example of Ferrarese devotional painting outside its original context, showing how Estense court culture shaped religious production in the region.
Technical Analysis
The composition groups the Madonna, Christ child, and young Baptist with warmth and intimacy in the Ferrarese manner, against a softly handled landscape setting. The colour is characteristically warm and rich — deep reds, blues, and golden flesh tones — handled with Venetian fluency.
