The Dead Christ with Angels
Leandro Bassano·c. 1580
Historical Context
Leandro Bassano was the son of Jacopo Bassano and continued the family workshop's production of religious paintings in the distinctive Bassano style. This Dead Christ with Angels from around 1580 reflects the emotional religious art of the Counter-Reformation period, when images of Christ's suffering were intended to move viewers to devotion. The Bassano workshop was one of the most productive in late sixteenth-century Venice.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas demonstrates the characteristic Bassano palette with warm, earthy tones and dramatic chiaroscuro. The emotional rendering of the dead Christ supported by angels reflects the workshop's specialization in devotional subjects.
