Matthew Baillie (1761–1823), F.R.S., after Hoppner
Henry Bone·1817
Historical Context
Henry Bone was the foremost enamel painter in Georgian England, appointed Enamel Painter to George III in 1801. This miniature after John Hoppner's portrait depicts Matthew Baillie, a pioneering Scottish physician and pathological anatomist who served as physician to George III. Baillie's Morbid Anatomy of Some of the Most Important Parts of the Human Body (1793) was the first systematic illustrated textbook of pathology.
Technical Analysis
Executed in vitreous enamel on a copper support, Bone's technique involved multiple firings at high temperature, building up translucent layers of color to achieve the luminous, jewel-like finish characteristic of his acclaimed miniatures.
