Saints John the Evangelist and Lawrence by Defendente Ferrari

Saints John the Evangelist and Lawrence

Defendente Ferrari·1510

Historical Context

Defendente Ferrari operated in the Piedmontese town of Chivasso, producing altarpieces for churches across the region between Turin and the Alpine foothills. This pairing of Saints John the Evangelist and Lawrence likely formed part of a larger polyptych, as was standard for Piedmontese church commissions of the early Cinquecento. Ferrari synthesized Lombard naturalism with the ornamental gold grounds still favored by conservative patrons in northwestern Italy.

Technical Analysis

Tooled gold background retains the late Gothic tradition while the figures' volumetric modeling reflects awareness of Leonardo's innovations in Milan. Jewel-toned drapery in ultramarine and vermilion is built through careful layering over a warm ground.
