Quintilia Fischieri
Federico Barocci·probably c. 1600
Historical Context
Federico Barocci was one of the most important Italian painters of the late sixteenth century, whose soft, luminous, emotionally tender style anticipated the Baroque. This portrait of Quintilia Fischieri, probably from around 1600, demonstrates his gift for portraiture that combined psychological sensitivity with a distinctive palette of soft pastel colors. Barocci's influence extended from the Marches throughout Italy.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas shows Barocci's characteristic soft, luminous palette with tender modeling of the face and subtle color harmonies. The gentle, atmospheric quality and refined technique demonstrate the distinctive style that influenced painters from Rubens to the Carracci.
