Nativity
Federico Barocci·1597
Historical Context
Federico Barocci painted this Nativity around 1597 for the church of Sant'Eufemia in Pesaro, during his final productive years as the leading painter in the Marche region of Italy. Barocci's deeply emotional approach to religious subjects anticipated the Baroque sensibility, combining naturalistic observation with intense spiritual feeling. His Nativity scenes were particularly admired for their tender depiction of the Madonna and Child bathed in supernatural light.
Technical Analysis
Barocci's signature sfumato technique creates a soft, glowing atmosphere around the sacred figures, with the Christ Child serving as the source of radiant light. His palette of pastel pinks, blues, and yellows gives the scene a dreamlike quality that distinguishes his work from contemporaries.
