Saint Jerome Penitent [right panel] by Jan Gossaert

Saint Jerome Penitent [right panel]

Jan Gossaert·c. 1509/1512

Historical Context

Gossaert's right panel of the Saint Jerome diptych from around 1509-1512 continues the devotional program begun in the left panel, depicting the Church Father in his desert penance with his lion companion. Gossaert was among the first Flemish painters to travel to Rome — he visited in 1508-1509 on a diplomatic mission for Philip of Burgundy — and his subsequent work showed the influence of classical antiquity and Italian Renaissance painting on the Flemish tradition. His Jerome subjects combined the devotional warmth of the Flemish tradition with the architectural grandeur and classical detail he had absorbed in Italy.

Technical Analysis

The companion panel maintains the same meticulous technique, with Gossaert's oil glazes creating depth and luminosity on the wood support. The continuity of landscape across both panels demonstrates his compositional sophistication and command of spatial illusion.
