The Warship 'Hollandia' in Full Sail by Ludolf Bakhuizen

The Warship 'Hollandia' in Full Sail

Ludolf Bakhuizen·1700

Historical Context

The Hollandia was one of the most celebrated warships of the Dutch fleet — a first-rate ship of the line that served in multiple major engagements of the late seventeenth century, including the Battle of Solebay (1672) and the subsequent Anglo-Dutch conflicts. Bakhuizen's 1700 canvas of the Hollandia in full sail, held at Lotherton Hall in Yorkshire, represents the type of specific ship portrait that Dutch naval painting occasionally produced alongside its more generic seascapes. By 1700 the Hollandia was already a veteran vessel of more than thirty years' service, and a painting of her in full sail was simultaneously a documentary record and a patriotic tribute to Dutch naval endurance. Lotherton Hall, now a branch of Leeds Museums and Galleries, holds a collection assembled by the Gascoigne family whose continental interests brought Dutch and Flemish works into their Yorkshire collection.

Technical Analysis

Oil on canvas, with Bakhuizen giving the Hollandia's specific hull form, gun port arrangement, and flag configuration the documentary precision of a ship portrait rather than a generalised warship type. The sails — the ship's identifying feature in full sail — are rendered at their most architecturally impressive, each canvas correctly set and sheeted for the depicted wind angle. The sea beneath the hull is relatively calm, putting all the visual emphasis on the ship itself.

Look Closer

  • ◆The Hollandia's specific gun port arrangement and hull form distinguish this from a generic warship and identify it as a documentary portrait of a named vessel
  • ◆Sails are set at the precise angle appropriate for the depicted wind, demonstrating Bakhuizen's practical knowledge of sail management
  • ◆The relatively calm sea removes distraction, placing all compositional emphasis on the ship's impressive architectural scale
  • ◆Dutch flags and pennants, rendered with saturated colour, assert national identity and naval pride throughout the rigging
