A Sea piece by Philip James de Loutherbourg

A Sea piece

Philip James de Loutherbourg·late 18th century-pre 1812

Historical Context

De Loutherbourg's Sea Piece from the late eighteenth century represents his contribution to British marine painting as one of the founders of the Romantic storm-at-sea tradition. De Loutherbourg was a French-born painter who settled in England in 1771 and became one of the most influential forces in British Romantic painting, introducing Continental traditions of sublime natural drama to an English art world that had been primarily concerned with landscape in a more composed, Claudean tradition. His sea pieces combined the Dutch marine tradition he had absorbed on the Continent with a new emotional intensity derived from Burke's philosophical analysis of the Sublime.

Technical Analysis

De Loutherbourg's oil on canvas captures the movement of the sea with dynamic brushwork and atmospheric color, using dramatic contrasts of light and dark to create a compelling marine scene.
