Mountain Scene with Bridges
Historical Context
Joos de Momper the Younger, one of the leading Flemish landscape specialists of the late 16th century, painted this mountain scene with bridges around 1590. Working in Antwerp, de Momper developed a distinctive style of panoramic mountain landscapes that drew on both Flemish tradition and his possible travels across the Alps. His landscapes were enormously popular and influential, establishing templates that other Flemish landscapists would follow for decades.
Technical Analysis
De Momper employs his characteristic tripartite color scheme, moving from warm browns in the foreground through greens in the middle ground to cool blues in the distance. The dramatic rocky formations are rendered with bold, confident brushwork that captures geological texture.
