Landscape with the Fall of Icarus
Historical Context
Joos de Momper the Younger painted this Landscape with the Fall of Icarus around 1607, depicting the mythological moment when Icarus plunged into the sea after flying too close to the sun. The subject, famously treated by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, allowed de Momper to combine his dramatic mountain landscapes with classical narrative. The tiny figure of the falling Icarus is almost lost in the vast landscape, following the Bruegel tradition of subordinating narrative to nature.
Technical Analysis
The panoramic composition features de Momper's characteristic dramatic rocky formations with the seascape opening in the distance. The palette follows his typical tripartite color scheme with warm foreground, green middle, and cool blue distance.
