John the Baptist in the desert

Master of Lourinhã created this painting around 1515, now in the Edifício e Igreja da Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Lourinhã. The work reflects the artistic production of the High Renaissance period, when workshops across Europe produced paintings for churches, courts, and private collectors. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
