This work by Master of the Life of the Virgin, created around 1480, reflects the anonymous workshop traditions that produced much of Europe's devotional art during the Early Renaissance period. Such panels served the liturgical and devotional needs of churches and private patrons across the continent. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
