This work by Master of the Life of the Virgin, created around 1480, reflects the anonymous workshop traditions that produced much of Europe's devotional art during the Early Renaissance period. Such panels served the liturgical and devotional needs of churches and private patrons across the continent. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting. The tension between Gothic grace and Renaissance structure gives art of this period a distinctive energy.
