Tod Mariens
Historical Context
The Meister von Sigmaringen's Tod Mariens (Death of the Virgin), painted around 1515 and now at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, depicts the apocryphal Dormition — the moment of Mary's death surrounded by the assembled apostles, who are miraculously gathered from across the known world for her passing. The Dormition was among the most theologically significant subjects in Marian devotion, prefiguring the Assumption of the Virgin into heaven that was typically depicted as a companion subject. The Kunsthalle Karlsruhe holds an important collection of German and South German panel painting that documents the regional diversity of German Renaissance art before the Reformation.
Technical Analysis
The compositional challenge of organizing the twelve apostles around the deathbed of Mary is handled through layered arrangements of heads and gestures. The dying Virgin is placed at the compositional center, her peaceful expression contrasting with the emotional responses of those surrounding her.
