Circumcision of Jesus
Historical Context
The Meister von Sigmaringen was an anonymous Swabian painter active around 1500-1510. This Circumcision of Jesus in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin depicts the ritual that prefigured Christ's Passion and was celebrated as the Feast of the Circumcision in the Catholic liturgical calendar. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows the characteristic angular style and bright coloring of Upper Swabian painting, with a compressed interior setting and careful attention to the liturgical elements of the circumcision ceremony.
