Madonna in gloria con Bambino, Santi e donatore
Moretto da Brescia·c. 1531
Historical Context
Madonna in Glory with Child, Saints and Donor from around 1531 combines the sacra conversazione format with a donor portrait. This traditional altarpiece type allowed Moretto to demonstrate his skill in organizing complex devotional compositions. The donor portrait within the altarpiece served as a perpetual intercessory image, keeping the patron's likeness before the sacred figures in the hope that their image would attract divine attention on the donor's behalf.
Technical Analysis
The multi-figure composition groups the sacred figures with the kneeling donor. Moretto's silvery palette unifies the diverse elements in a harmonious devotional image.
