The Visitation
Historical Context
Botticelli created this Virgin and Child around 1490, one of his characteristic late Madonna compositions produced when his workshop was meeting continuous Florentine demand while his personal work was becoming more austere and spiritually intense. The composition reflects the mature Botticelli Madonna type he had developed through the 1480s: the Virgin's combination of maternal tenderness and prophetic melancholy, the Christ Child's gesturing engagement with the viewer. By 1490 the religious atmosphere in Florence was changing under Savonarola's growing influence, and Botticelli's own spirituality was deepening — a process that would culminate in his burning of his secular paintings and the creation of the visionary Mystical Nativity in 1501. This work stands at the threshold of that transformation.
