Crucifixion with Saints (Triptych)
Puccio di Simone·1356
Historical Context
Puccio di Simone's Crucifixion with Saints triptych, dated to around 1356, presents the central scene of Christ's Passion flanked by panels of attendant saints. Puccio was a Florentine painter active in the mid-fourteenth century who worked in the tradition of Bernardo Daddi, producing altarpieces and devotional panels for Florentine churches and their rural dependencies. The triptych format, with its hinged wings that could be closed for protection and opened for worship, was one of the most popular altarpiece configurations of the Trecento.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera and gold on three hinged wooden panels, the triptych shows Puccio's characteristic clarity of composition and gentle figure style derived from Bernardo Daddi. The refined gold tooling and delicate color harmonies of rose, blue, and green reflect the high standard of mid-Trecento Florentine panel painting craftsmanship.
