The Nativity
Bernardo Daddi·1360
Historical Context
This Nativity attributed to the circle of Bernardo Daddi (c. 1360) continues the style of one of the most important Florentine painters of the mid-Trecento. Daddi, a direct pupil of Giotto, established a prolific workshop that produced intimate devotional panels prized across Tuscany and beyond. Now in the Wallace Collection, this panel reflects the enduring demand for Daddi's graceful, approachable Madonnas and narrative scenes well after the master's death in 1348.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera on panel with gold ground. The delicate figural style and soft modeling of faces reflect Daddi's workshop tradition, combining Giottesque spatial awareness with the decorative elegance favored by Sienese-influenced Florentine patrons.
