Portrait of Hans Gunder by Hans von Kulmbach

Portrait of Hans Gunder

Hans von Kulmbach·1509

Historical Context

Hans von Kulmbach, a Franconian painter trained in Dürer's workshop, created this Portrait of Hans Gunder in 1509 for the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. Kulmbach became one of the most productive painters in Nuremberg after establishing his independence, working on altarpieces, portraits, and designs for stained glass in the city's many churches. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

The portrait exhibits the clear, precise drawing characteristic of the Nuremberg school under Dürer's influence, with careful rendering of the sitter's features and the restrained palette typical of early-sixteenth-century German bourgeois portraiture.
