The Calling of St Peter
Hans von Kulmbach·1514
Historical Context
Hans von Kulmbach painted this Calling of Saint Peter around 1514 for the Uffizi. Kulmbach was one of Dürer's most capable Nuremberg followers, developing a distinctive style that combined the master's graphic precision with a warmer, more Italian-influenced palette acquired during his own travels south. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows Kulmbach's characteristic blend of Düreresque draftsmanship with Italian color sensibility, presenting the lakeside calling scene with careful attention to the landscape setting and the psychological exchange between Christ and Peter.
