Saint Anne with the Virgin
Angelos Akotantos·1440
Historical Context
Angelos Akotantos, one of the most important painters of the Cretan School, created this icon of Saint Anne with the Virgin around 1440. The subject depicting the education of the Virgin by her mother Anne was deeply significant in Byzantine theology, emphasizing Mary's preparation for her divine role. Akotantos worked in Venetian-ruled Heraklion (Candia), where Byzantine and Western artistic traditions coexisted and gradually blended.
Technical Analysis
The icon follows Byzantine egg-tempera technique on gold ground with the traditional hieratic composition, while showing subtle Western influences in the softened modeling of faces characteristic of the mature Cretan School.
