Christ the Vine
Angelos Akotantos·1441
Historical Context
Angelos Akotantos was a prominent Cretan icon painter active in the first half of the 15th century, one of the earliest Greek artists to sign his works. This Christ the Vine icon, dated 1441, illustrates the biblical metaphor from John 15:1 ("I am the true vine"), depicting Christ as the central trunk with apostles in the vine branches. The work exemplifies the Cretan School that blended Byzantine icon traditions with emerging Italian Renaissance influences.
Technical Analysis
The icon combines traditional Byzantine gold-ground technique and frontal composition with subtle Western elements in the modeling of faces, reflecting the artistic cross-pollination between Venetian-ruled Crete and mainland Greece.
