Maria Salome und Maria Cleophae
Meister von Veringen·1505
Historical Context
The Meister von Veringen painted Mary Salome and Mary Cleophas around 1505 for the Wurth Collection. These two Marys, identified in medieval tradition as half-sisters of the Virgin, were venerated as part of the Holy Kinship, an extended family of Jesus that was a popular devotional subject in German-speaking lands. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The panel presents both women with the precise drawing and bright coloring of the Upper Swabian school, with careful attention to their costume and identifying attributes.
