Die Heiligen Martin und Sebastian
Meister von Veringen·1505
Historical Context
The Meister von Veringen painted Saints Martin and Sebastian around 1505 for the Wurth Collection. Martin, the Roman soldier who shared his cloak with a beggar, and Sebastian, the arrow-pierced martyr, were two of the most frequently paired military saints in German devotional art. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel presents both warrior saints with their traditional attributes, Martin with his sword and Sebastian bound, in the precise Upper Swabian manner with bright local coloring.
