St. Margareta
Jörg Stocker·1500
Historical Context
Jörg Stocker painted this Saint Margaret for the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Stocker was an Ulm painter active in the late fifteenth century who produced altarpieces for Swabian churches in the tradition of the Ulm school. Saint panels were fundamental units of Renaissance altarpiece production, produced individually or as wings of polyptychs, and served the devotional needs of the commissioning church, guild, or confraternity whose patron saint they depicted.
Technical Analysis
The panel presents the female saint with her dragon attribute in the characteristic Swabian manner with bright coloring and precise linear drawing.
