Verkündigung an Maria (Inv. Nr. 2.42) by Jörg Stocker

Verkündigung an Maria (Inv. Nr. 2.42)

Jörg Stocker·1490

Historical Context

Jörg Stocker's second Verkündigung an Maria, painted around 1490 and now in the Sammlung Dursch, is a companion Annunciation panel to the work in the Museum of the Diocese of Rottenburg, likely forming part of the same altarpiece program or produced for a related commission within the same Swabian ecclesiastical context. The multiplicity of Annunciation panels from the same hand reflects the devotional economy of the late fifteenth century, in which the same subjects were produced in multiple versions for different patrons and different liturgical purposes. Stocker occupied a significant position in the Swabian painting tradition as a practitioner who absorbed Flemish naturalism into local conventions at a moment before the Dürer revolution would transform southern German art. The Sammlung Dursch preserves several of Stocker's works, making it a primary resource for understanding his production and its relationship to the broader Augsburg painting tradition.

Technical Analysis

The panel follows the same compositional approach as the Diocese of Rottenburg Annunciation, with Stocker's characteristic Swabian figure types and measured use of a domestic or architectural setting. Minor variations between the two versions likely reflect differences in the specific liturgical or devotional purpose of each commission within the altarpiece program.
