Diptyque Carondelet : La Vierge à l'Enfant
Jan Gossaert·1517
Historical Context
Jan Gossaert painted this diptych wing of the Virgin and Child around 1516, possibly the left wing of the Carondelet Diptych in which the chancellor of Flanders Jean de Carondelet is shown in devotional prayer facing this image of Mary and Jesus. Gossaert had transformed Flemish painting by introducing a new classicizing manner after his 1508–09 trip to Rome with Philip of Burgundy, where he studied ancient sculpture and Roman architecture firsthand. His Virgin and Child compositions display the fruits of that Italian journey: sculpted, physically substantial figures in elaborate architectural settings derived from classical antiquity. The diptych format—patron facing the Madonna across the hinged frame—created an intimate devotional dialogue between worshipper and holy image.
Technical Analysis
The panel showcases Gossaert's exceptional technique with the meticulous rendering of flesh, fabric, and architectural detail that made him one of the most technically accomplished Netherlandish painters of his generation.
