La Famille de Sainte Anne
Quinten Metsys·1509
Historical Context
The Holy Family of Saint Anne—showing Anne with her daughter the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child—is the central panel of the 1509 St. Anne Altarpiece from Leuven, now in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. As the altarpiece’s focal image, this panel received Metsys’s most concentrated attention, presenting the three holy generations in an intimate domestic grouping that emphasized the human tenderness of the sacred family. Metsys's religious paintings combine the Flemish tradition of meticulous naturalism with compositional ideas absorbed from Italian Renaissance models.
Technical Analysis
As the altarpiece’s centerpiece, this panel displays Metsys’s most refined technique: luminous flesh tones, precisely rendered textiles, and a warm chromatic harmony that unifies the family group.
