Madonna con il Bambino
Niccolò di Segna·1335
Historical Context
This Madonna and Child by Niccolo di Segna, painted around 1335, represents the continuation of the great Sienese painting tradition established by his father Segna di Bonaventura and grandfather Duccio di Buoninsegna. Working in Siena during a period of intense artistic production, Niccolo maintained the lyrical elegance and refined color sense that defined the Sienese school. The intimate scale and devotional character of this panel suggest it was made for private worship or a small chapel.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on a gold-ground panel, the painting features the elongated proportions and gentle curving lines inherited from Duccio's workshop. The Madonna's mantle is rendered in the deep ultramarine blue prized by Sienese painters, with fine gold striations at the borders.
