Sainte tenant une bannière
Niccolò di Segna·1340
Historical Context
Niccolò di Segna, son and follower of the Sienese painter Segna di Bonaventura, painted this female saint holding a banner around 1340. Working within the established Sienese tradition descending from Duccio, Niccolò produced altarpiece panels for churches across Tuscany. His conservative but competent style perpetuated the Ducciesque tradition well into the mid-Trecento, maintaining the luminous color and linear grace of the Sienese school.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera on gold-ground panel with punched decorative haloes. Niccolò's technique follows Sienese conventions with flowing contour lines, jewel-toned drapery, and the characteristic Ducciesque treatment of facial features with almond eyes and delicate modeling.
