Portrait of Cornelia Sandrien, wife of Petrus Aegidius (1486-1533) by Quinten Metsys

Portrait of Cornelia Sandrien, wife of Petrus Aegidius (1486-1533)

Quinten Metsys·1514

Historical Context

Cornelia Sandrien was the wife of Petrus Aegidius (Pieter Gillis), the Antwerp humanist and city clerk who was Erasmus’s close friend. Metsys painted this portrait in 1514 as a companion piece to his portrait of Aegidius himself, and both were likely connected to the famous diptych Metsys created as a gift from Aegidius and Erasmus to Thomas More. The Grand Ducal collection in Oldenburg preserves this link to the most celebrated humanist friendship of the Northern Renaissance.

Technical Analysis

The portrait’s meticulous rendering of Cornelia’s headdress and costume demonstrates Metsys’s Netherlandish precision in depicting textile surfaces. The calm, composed expression is modeled with subtle tonal transitions.
