The Signing of the National Covenant in Greyfriars Kirkyard by William Allan

The Signing of the National Covenant in Greyfriars Kirkyard

William Allan·1838

Historical Context

William Allan painted "The Signing of the National Covenant in Greyfriars Kirkyard" in 1838, depicting one of the most important events in Scottish history. In 1638, Scottish Presbyterians signed the National Covenant in Edinburgh's Greyfriars Kirk to resist Charles I's imposition of the English Prayer Book on Scotland. The event precipitated the Bishops' Wars and contributed to the English Civil War. Allan treated Scottish historical subjects with documentary ambition.

Technical Analysis

Allan renders the mass gathering with attention to both the architectural setting of Greyfriars and the individual figures of the signatories. The dramatic composition captures the political intensity of the moment through expressive gestures and the crowd's fervent reactions.
