The Bashkirs by William Allan

The Bashkirs

William Allan·1814

Historical Context

William Allan painted "The Bashkirs" in 1814, drawing on his extensive travels in Russia and Central Asia between 1805 and 1814. Allan was one of the few British artists to travel deep into the Russian Empire, and his paintings of Bashkir, Circassian, and Cossack subjects provided European audiences with rare visual information about the peoples of the Russian periphery. The Bashkirs were Turkic cavalry renowned for their participation in the Napoleonic Wars.

Technical Analysis

Allan renders the Bashkir figures with ethnographic attention to costume, equipment, and physiognomy. The warm palette and careful characterization demonstrate his direct observation of subjects rarely seen by Western European audiences.
