Paneelschildering "H. Anna te Drieën" op hout, omgeving Quinten Matsijs, eind 15e eeuw
Quinten Metsys·1487
Historical Context
This panel of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child—the “Anna te Drieën” or Anna Selbdritt in German—dates to the late fifteenth century and is attributed to the circle of Quinten Metsys rather than the master himself. Castle Huis Bergh in the Netherlands, a medieval castle with an important art collection assembled by Jan Herman van Heek, preserves this devotional panel. The subject of the three holy generations was especially popular in the late medieval Low Countries.
Technical Analysis
The workshop attribution is supported by the competent but somewhat formulaic execution, lacking the distinctive sfumato and psychological depth of Metsys’s autograph works. The gold background suggests conservative devotional taste.
