The Lamentation of Christ
Historical Context
The Master of the Mansi Magdalen painted this Lamentation of Christ around 1510, depicting the mourning of Christ's body after the Deposition from the Cross in the Flemish devotional tradition. This anonymous Bruges-based painter is named after a famous painting of Mary Magdalene in the Mansi collection; his Lamentations show the influence of Gerard David's deeply felt Passion scenes. The Lamentation—also called the Pietà when focused on the Virgin alone, or the Entombment when including the tomb—was among the most emotionally demanding subjects in devotional painting, requiring the artist to convey grief, tenderness, and reverence simultaneously. The Mansi Master's version emphasizes the intimate, compassionate aspects of the subject rather than its dramatic or theatrical possibilities.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates the workshop's refined technique with careful figure grouping, expressive mourning gestures, and the rich color characteristic of commercially successful Netherlandish Passion paintings.
