Virgin at prayer
Historical Context
The Master of the Mansi Magdalen was an anonymous Netherlandish painter active around 1500-1525. This Virgin at Prayer from around 1487 shows the Virgin in quiet devotion, a contemplative image type designed for personal meditation. The master's work shows the influence of the Bruges and Antwerp painting traditions. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting. The tension between Gothic grace and Renaissance structure gives art of this period a distinctive energy.
Technical Analysis
