Saint Catherine (polyptych, panel 1 of 5) by Master of the Dominican Effigies

Saint Catherine (polyptych, panel 1 of 5)

Master of the Dominican Effigies·1345

Historical Context

The Master of the Dominican Effigies, an anonymous Florentine painter active around 1330–1350, takes his name from a series of portraits of Dominican saints. This panel of Saint Catherine formed part of a five-part polyptych likely intended for a Dominican church, reflecting the order's strong devotion to Catherine of Alexandria. The artist worked within the Giottesque tradition but with a distinctive emphasis on ornamental richness.

Technical Analysis

Tempera and gold on poplar panel with carefully tooled haloes and decorative borders. The artist employs Giottesque modeling for the face while favoring more patterned, decorative drapery treatment characteristic of minor Florentine masters of the mid-Trecento.
