Madonna and Child with Saint Anne
Master of Alkmaar·1500
Historical Context
The Master of Alkmaar painted this Madonna and Child with Saint Anne for the Bristol City Museum. The Anna Selbdritt, showing three generations of the Holy Family, was one of the most popular devotional subjects in Northern European art, reflecting the widespread cult of Saint Anne that peaked around 1500. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel presents the three-generational group in the standard Netherlandish devotional format, with careful oil technique and warm coloring characteristic of the North Holland school.
