Richard Terrick (1710–1777), Bishop of London
Historical Context
This 1764 portrait of Richard Terrick, Bishop of London, depicts one of the senior clergymen of the Church of England during the reign of George III. Terrick's episcopate coincided with a period of significant religious debate and colonial expansion. Dance's portraits combined the formal conventions of Grand Manner portraiture with a cooler, more austere palette and sculptural figure treatment that reflected his years studying in Rome under the influence of Pompeo Batoni.
Technical Analysis
The episcopal portrait renders Terrick in clerical vestments with appropriate gravity, Dance's measured technique creating a dignified representation of ecclesiastical authority.
