Gustavus Brander (1720–1787) by Nathaniel Dance-Holland

Gustavus Brander (1720–1787)

Nathaniel Dance-Holland·1770

Historical Context

Gustavus Brander, painted in 1770, was a wealthy London merchant of Swedish descent who assembled one of the most important natural history collections of the eighteenth century, particularly noted for his fossil collection from the Hampshire Hamp Basin that he donated to the British Museum. Brander's combination of commercial wealth and scientific collecting placed him within the Georgian culture of learned gentlemen who bridged trade and knowledge. His friendship with Sir Hans Sloane and his gift to the British Museum connected him to the foundations of British public natural history. Dance's portrait documents this world of enlightened collector-merchants who sustained Georgian scientific institutions.

Technical Analysis

Dance presents the collector with the composed assurance of a Georgian gentleman of means and learning, the restrained setting appropriate to a man whose distinction rested on intellectual rather than political achievement.
