William Bromfield by Nathaniel Dance-Holland

William Bromfield

Nathaniel Dance-Holland·1776

Historical Context

William Bromfield, painted in 1776, was a prominent London surgeon who attended George III, founded the Lock Hospital for venereal disease treatment, and served as Sergeant Surgeon—one of the senior surgical appointments in the royal medical household. Bromfield's practice combined royal service with the charitable medical work embodied in the Lock Hospital, which he established partly as a response to the widespread venereal disease that Georgian London's sexual culture generated. Dance's portrait of a royal physician reflects his access to the Georgian establishment's professional classes—the lawyers, doctors, and clergy who formed the educated backbone of polite society.

Technical Analysis

Dance renders the surgeon with professional dignity, the sober dress and direct gaze conveying the authority of a man accustomed to making life-and-death decisions. The plain background and restrained palette suit the practical character of the sitter.
