John Robison (1739–1805)

This 1798 portrait of John Robison at the University of Edinburgh is a version of the physicist’s portrait also held by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Robison’s importance as a scientist and educator warranted multiple portrait commissions, and the Edinburgh University version documents his role within the academic institution. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays bold, direct brushwork building form through vigorous strokes of light and shadow rather than careful blending, with minimal underdrawing.
