Painted in 1892 on cardboard and now in the Louvre's collection, this depiction of a bed is among Lautrec's most direct and unadorned domestic subjects — the bed itself as object and space of human intimacy, a site of sleep, rest, illness, and sexuality that he observed repeatedly across the decade. The Louvre acquisition, unusual for a work of such deliberate anti-monumentality, testifies to the canonical status Lautrec's intimate subjects have achieved.
