Christ as Man of Sorrows by Aelbrecht Bouts

Christ as Man of Sorrows

Aelbrecht Bouts·1500

Historical Context

Aelbrecht Bouts painted this Christ as Man of Sorrows, continuing the devotional image type that his father Dirk Bouts had established as a specialty of the Louvain workshop. The Man of Sorrows, showing the suffering Christ displaying his wounds, was designed to inspire personal meditation on the Passion. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.

Technical Analysis

The half-length Christ figure follows the Bouts workshop formula with precise oil technique, restrained expression, and the careful rendering of the wounds and crown of thorns in the measured, contemplative Louvain manner.
