Symbolic representation of the Blood of Christ: Fons Pietatis
Historical Context
Goswin van der Weyden painted this symbolic Fons Pietatis for the Gothenburg Museum of Art. The Fountain of Piety, showing the blood of Christ flowing into a fountain that sustains the faithful, was a powerful eucharistic image that affirmed the salvific power of Christ's sacrifice and the sacrament of communion. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The symbolic composition combines realistic figure rendering with theological allegory, presenting the fountain motif with the detailed Brabantine technique Goswin inherited from his grandfather Rogier's workshop tradition.
